The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the GIPC family. Studies in mice suggest that this gene is required for postnatal maturation of the hair bundle and long-term survival of hair cells and spiral ganglion in the ear. Mutations in this gene are associated with autosomal recessive deafness. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2011] Function: GIPC3 is widely expressed in adult and fetal tissues. Highest levels are found in jejunum, lymph node, parietal lobe, fetal spleen and fetal thymus. It is expressed in cervical, melanoma, chronic myelogenous and gastric cancer cell lines. Tissue Specificity: Widely expressed in adult and fetal tissues. Highest levels are found in jejunum, lymph node, parietal lobe, fetal spleen and fetal thymus. Expressed in cervical, melanoma, chronic myelogenous and gastric cancer cell lines. DISEASE: Deafness, autosomal recessive, 15 (DFNB15) [MIM:601869]: A form of non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss with prelingual onset. Sensorineural deafness results from damage to the neural receptors of the inner ear, the nerve pathways to the brain, or the area of the brain that receives sound information.
