This gene likely encodes a metallophosphoesterase. The encoded protein may play a role a brain development. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009] Function: MMPED2 (Metallophosphoesterase domain containing 2) displays low metallophosphoesterase activity (in vitro). It is predominantly expressed in the fetal brain and is thought to have a role in development of the nervous system. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
